Many were considered, few were chosen…

So the final six have been selected…

Oh, actually it is going to be the Magnificent Seven!  Out of all of the applicants, we had seven standout applicants and we couldn’t decide who not to pick, so in the end we decided to take seven competitors into the competition.

The lucky finalists for Richmond Borough’s Biggest Loser competition will start their 12-week fitness regime on February 6th. It is going to be a very exciting and emotional journey.

The group met on Wednesday, February 1, at Mooca cafe in Teddington High Street, for a chance to size up the competition and meet each other.  The next stage of the process was to meet again on Sunday night for the weigh in and tale of the tape.  The accountability has started already…

The participants are Alyssa Rowlandson, 40, Holly Scott, 32, Nick Brown, 43, Louise Anderson, 32, all from Teddington and Natasha Thomas, 43, Emma Hole, 33, and Jennifer Brunner, 39, from Hampton.

Natasha Thomas, the “full-time domestic goddess” said: “I just want to get back to being able to look in the mirror and not be disgusted with what I’m looking at.”, and Louise Anderson, a full-time mother said: “I have two very young children and I would like to make sure that I’m around for them. I’m quite nervous about starting the competition, but I’m feeling really good about it now.”

This is going to be an exciting and emotional journey, which you can follow every step of the way right here. So be sure to check back regularly to keep up to date and support our amazing competitors.

Should you train when you have a cold?

The question I am sure you have asked youself before at this time of year is:  ‘Should you exercise when you are ill’?

There is plenty of research that proves that regular exercise improves your immune system, enabling you to fight off infection.  However, it is also true that training while you are ill can cause serious damage to your health.

When you have flu, your body’s immune system is very low and the best advice is not to train for a few days until you feel better.  But if you just have the seasonal sniffles without any symptoms like a fever and aching muscles, and you feeling like training, you can do a light workout.  If you have a chesty cough or fever, you probably have inflamed tissue in your lungs, which could be made worse when you train.

Generally, if your symptoms are from the neck up, it’s OK to train (unless you have a severe headache), but if they are from the neck down, it’s best not to train and rest for a few days.

Symptoms you can train with:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Slight headache

Symptoms NOT to train with:

  • Muscle ache
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue/Tiredness
  • Severe headache

It is also a myth that you can sweat out a cold!Trying to sweat out a cold through training, sauna or steam room can actually make your symptoms worse.   These will make you more dehydrated, which causes your airways to dry out and this can worsen a blocked nose or sore throat.  The more fluids you take on the easier it will be for your body to clear up the congestion.

Give your body the best chance of beating the winter illnesses by stocking up on the following immune boosting foods:

Salmon: Rich in Omega 3 and contains Vitamin D, a potent immune booster against viruses.

Garlic: Rich in antiviral and antibacterial compounds to keep flu virus at bay.

Kiwi Fruit: Packed full of vitamin C to help ease the symptoms of a cold and speed up recovery.

Berries & Citrus Fruit: Also rich in vitamin C.

Pumpkins Seeds: Rich in Zinc and an all-round immune booster.

Dark Chocolate: Ok…as it is nearly Christmas!  Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants.  And it tastes really nice!

Many people think Vitamin C is the best way to prevent colds.  Despite popular belief, studies have found that vitamin C does not stop colds. It can help you recover quicker, but only if taken daily at the onset of the symptoms.

Zinc helps produce a crucial component of the immune system. If taken within 24hours of symptoms appearing, it can reduce a colds duration and severity. So go and stock up on some Zinc tablets today in preparation.

Over 40% of cancers due to lifestyle…

Very interesting article on the BBC website today…

Nearly half of cancers diagnosed in the UK each year – over 130,000 in total – are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things, a review reveals.

Tobacco is the biggest culprit, causing 23% of cases in men and 15.6% in women, says the Cancer Research UK report.

Next comes a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in men’s diets, while for women it is being overweight….

The full article can be read here:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16031149

The key here is not to go crazy and become a nun or a monk, but just by starting to make very small lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your health and wellbeing.  Not just to prevent cancer, but so many other avoidable diseases and illnesses.

You are LITERALLY what you eat…

When it comes to achieving and maintaining a healthy, lean body AND a healthy lifestyle there are four aspects you need:

  1. Nutrition – What you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat.
  1. Training – Resistance and Cardiovascular.
  • Resistance Training:  Training with free weights, weight machines, resistance bands, exercise balls, and even your own body weight – anything that gives your muscles resistance to work against.
  • Cardiovascular:  Working out your heart and burning calories by moving your body e.g. walking, jogging, swimming, exercise classes…things that make you sweat.
  1. Motivation – The desire to achieve results, this can be internal or external motivation.
  1. Accountability – If you aren’t following a specific programme, have goals set to achieve and are not measuring results, then you are NEVER going to get results.

All four of these aspects will be covered on this blog. We will look at all of these aspects individually and also delve deep into each of them, as well as looking further afield into other aspects that compliment all four.

Nutrition is Number 1 on this list for a reason. WITHOUT a nutrition programme then you really cannot expect to get ANY results.  It is my strong belief that if a Gym, Personal Trainer, Fitness Camp, Boot Camp, Exercise Class, or anyone else is promising results WITHOUT a nutritional programme, then you are mis-selling you their product or service.

A nice example of this is the ‘amazing’ effect of various fat burning pills and weight loss products, such as Slim-Fast.  If you have ever read the small print on the label of these, or seen the small print on the TV adverts, you will see an asterisk next to their claim and a disclaimer.  The Slim Fast example is:

“*Can only help weight loss as part of a calorie controlled diet and an active lifestyle.”

In other words, this star is what allows them to make the claim that their product can help you lose weight. Because what they are REALLY saying is: LOSE WEIGHT FAST (when you combine our product with a calorie restricted diet/healthy, balanced and nutritious meal plan).

Why is this?   Because exercise alone or taking a fat loss supplement just isn’t that effective for weight loss.

I know that EVERYONE is pitching their new fat loss workout these days, but slaving away in the gym alone,  for example, will give you very limited weight loss results.

Following the latest greatest fat loss workout with out eating correctly is like popping fat loss pills while Eating a super-sized McDonald’s meal.

The good news is that weight loss IS POSSIBLE, and fast.  Eat to lose weight.  Workout to build or maintain muscles.

This is the simplest and most effective way to lose body fat for good…but it HAS to involve the correct nutritional plan!

Be Different. Be Better.
